What is pregnancy prevention?
  • Medication used to prevent pregnancy is called Levonorgestrel

  • If your baseline pregnancy test in the emergency department was negative and you are able to get pregnant you will be offered this medication

  • The medication does not cause an abortion or miscarriage if you are already pregnant. You will not be offered the medicine if you are already pregnant

  • The medicine works the same way as birth control pills and prevents an egg from being released from the ovary

  • The most common name is Plan B

  • Levonorgestrel must be taken within 72 hours of the sexual assault

  • It can be a one dose or two dose medication that is 95% effective in preventing pregnancy if taken within 24 hours of the sexual assault

  • If experience any nausea or vomiting after taking the medicine please call your provider immediately

  • You will be re-tested for pregnancy on your follow up visit
